Hesperia History

Hesperia is located at the intersection of I-15 and US Highway 395; the town was incorporated in 1988. The population has grown rapidly as businesses have moved into the area over the last 20 years (the current population is estimated at over 90,000 residents). Several commercial development projects have been completed here recently including the addition of major retail and industrial centers. Due to its convenient location and access to over 300,000 High Desert residents, Hesperia will continue to grow and prosper.

The Mojave River

Unlike most rivers, the waters of the Mojave River flow inland instead of toward the ocean. The river also runs below the sand underground, and could easily be known as the “Upside-down and Backwards” river. The waters of the Mojave originate in the San Bernardino Mountains, flow above land between the Victorville and Apply Valleys, and slip back under the sands before terminating in the middle of the desert. The Mojave Road followed the river from Soda Dry Lake to the Canyon Pass and desert Indians once used this as a trade route where water was readily available.
